Sakura, manga, kimono: Representation of Japan at Japanese themed events Bc. Tomáš Nezveda Abstract This thesis studies the issue of a representation of Japan at Japanese themed events in the Czech Republic. The conclusions of this thesis are based on empirical research in three essential terrains - the Japan Information and Culture Centre of the Japanese Embassy in the Czech Republic, the Czech-Japanese Association, and the Czech anime community. Each terrain's activities are analyzed to identify images of Japan they produce for their visitors. This contextual basis is built on for a further analysis of three significant issues that arise from the research - the difference and prevalence of Japanese culture in the Czech Republic, its authenticity, and the tendency of Czech fans to idealize Japan.

Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Cultural Study of the Reality TV Phenomenon Survivor

This bachelor thesis is occupied with the phenomenon of the reality TV show Survivor (CBS, 2000). This cultural essay examines the historical development of the reality TV genre. Further, it studies cultural meanings of the reality TV show Survivor, such as a social darwinism, rituals, a life in a community or a voting drama. The main part deals with possibilities of the representation of masculinity in television. Multiple masculinities are analyzed by using the methodology of men's studies, especially through the perspective of the hierarchy of masculinities and the hegemonic masculinities by Raewyn Connell, and through the concept of the mutilated man by Elisabeth Badinter. The final case study is focused on the representation of nonhegemonic masculinities in reality TV show Survivor.

Jitka Pánek Jurková CULTURAL REPRESENTATION OF A DIVIDED SOCIETY: The Case of Israel in the Czech Republic Abstract: The thesis explores the cultural representation of the State of Israel in the Czech Republic from an anthropological perspective, depicting how the topic of the state is appropriated and represented by different actors. Among its key theoretical statements, the thesis differentiates between cultural diplomacy-governmentally facilitated communication with a foreign audience through whatever is considered as culture-and the cultural representation of a state-the resulting picture of a state that depends on a multiplicity of narratives that emerge when various actors use the topic of the state to publicly assert their self-understanding. In an actor-oriented analysis, based on events observation, the thesis deals with the Israeli foreign policy institutions, artists engaged in cultural diplomatic activities, the Diaspora, audiences, various Czech non-governmental actors including pro-Israeli support groups, BDS movements, and others. Cultural and Mental Representations of Czech Mountain Ranges

The subject of this work is to describe czech mountains as a qualitatively different phenomenon from most of the other territory of the Czech Republic. The work is divided into four chapters. The first two chapters outline the theoretical background and methodology. On the basis of this methodology, the other two chapters analyse the landscape of the Bohemian Forest on three levels: natural, cultural and symbolic. "Out of the Path": Cultural Representations of the King of Šumava Mountains

The thesis deals with literary and film representations of "The King of the Šumava Mountains" and stories which themes are close to this topic (converters, protection of national border). The thesis pursues the interconnection of particular works with their period context and medialization. The attention is also put to the intertextual "communication" within the works themselves and to the relationship between individual characters of "The King of Šumava Mountains" and archetypes of the contemporary world. The emphasis is placed on the analysis of the film (and the novel of the same title) The King of the Šumava Mountains alongside the prose books The Death of the King of the Šumava Mountains and The Return of the King of the Šumava Mountains. The conclusion articulates the same and the different features of individual representations which are often narrowly connected to the time of its inception.

Lucie Sedláčková Dissertation Globalization in the Contemporary Dutch Novel Abstract in English This dissertation deals with representations of different aspects of globalization in the contemporary Dutch novel. The main questions are: 1. Which representations of the aspects of globalization can be found in the contemporary Dutch novels analyzed in this dissertation? 2. Are there relations between the knowledge of this phenomenon in specialist literature and in the fiction analyzed in this dissertation? 3. Which points of view do literary texts take with respect to globalization? The research method is based on the theory of cultural representation, but the traditional instruments of literary theory are also employed. The goal of the dissertation is to survey discourse about globalization in the analyzed fiction; the terminology is derived from the specialist, especially sociological, literature on this phenomenon from 1990 on. Globalization is considered a complex process which was accelerated mainly after 1989 by communication technology, the development of the world economy and politics (especially the fall of the Iron Curtain).
